A driver for the Ibabu Bus Company, identified as Robert Twinomujuni, faces charges after being apprehended by traffic police in Mbarara. The incident occurred on Wednesday at the Biharwe Checkpoint, situated along the Mbarara-Masaka Highway, where Twinomujuni was operating a passenger bus.
During a routine stop, officers administered a breathalyser test. The results indicated that Twinomujuni had a blood alcohol content exceeding the legal threshold for drivers. Consequently, he was taken into custody and is currently detained at the Mbarara Central Police Station.
Police spokesperson Michael Kananura stated that a case file is being prepared, and the driver is expected to appear in court to face charges related to driving under the influence of alcohol and endangering public safety. Kananura emphasized that road safety checks are actively ongoing across the region.
“All major checkpoints are fully equipped with breathalysers. Traffic officers have clear instructions to conduct prompt alcohol testing on PSV drivers whenever there is suspicion or as part of randomised checks,” Kananura noted.
He further highlighted the significant risks posed by intoxicated commercial drivers to passengers and other road users, urging all drivers to prioritize safety and refrain from drinking and driving. The Uganda Police Traffic and Road Safety Directorate is continuing its surveillance and operations to reduce road accidents nationwide.
Drivers and transport operators are reminded to adhere strictly to traffic laws, avoid alcohol consumption while on duty, and ensure the safety of their passengers. Police also encourage passengers to remain vigilant and report any suspicious driving behavior to the authorities.
