The State House Investors Protection Unit (SHIPU) has expressed optimism that increased engagement with Germany’s new Ambassador to Uganda, Sigrid Ingelore Luise Sommer, will significantly strengthen economic ties and attract more investment from German companies.

During a courtesy visit to SHIPU offices in Kampala, Ambassador Sommer met with SHIPU’s head, Col. Edith Nakalema, and other officials. Col. Nakalema highlighted the long-standing relationship between Uganda and Germany, noting the contributions of German companies and development agencies to various sectors of the Ugandan economy.

Col. Nakalema pointed out that the ambassador’s visit presented a valuable opportunity to deepen this cooperation, specifically mentioning agriculture, logistics, vocational education, electric mobility, and sustainable development as areas where German support has been impactful. She cited examples such as Bayer and DVA Uganda in agriculture, DHL in logistics, GIZ in renewable energy, and Gogo Electric’s battery assembly plant.

SHIPU, established by President Yoweri Museveni in May 2023, is tasked with ensuring investors receive support and are not hindered by public officials. Col. Nakalema emphasized that the unit collaborates with government agencies and anti-corruption bodies to address investor complaints, including issues of delays or misconduct.

To further facilitate engagement, SHIPU also highlighted the Uganda Investors Protection Portal, an online platform launched in December 2023, which allows investors to access information and submit inquiries. This platform, hosted by NITA-U and administered by SHIPU, aims to streamline due diligence and improve government responsiveness, thereby reducing the risk of fraud for investors.

Uganda remains appreciative of Germany’s developmental contributions, and SHIPU is confident that bilateral economic cooperation will continue to flourish. The meeting underscored a commitment to continued collaboration between Ugandan institutions and German partners to foster investment and address investor challenges.
