The family of Renee Good, a U.S. citizen tragically killed by an Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officer during an immigration operation in Minneapolis, has initiated legal action. Two lawsuits have been filed against the U.S. government and high-ranking officials from the Trump administration, alleging wrongful death and a conspiracy to violate civil rights.
One lawsuit contends that the operation itself fostered an environment of “state-sponsored violence” leading to Good’s death. The family’s lawyer stated that the government is being held responsible for the incident. The other lawsuit targets the ICE officer who discharged the fatal shots, Jonathan Ross, along with several senior federal officials including former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and White House figures Stephen Miller and Tom Homan.
This second suit accuses these officials of orchestrating a “conspiracy to interfere with civil rights.” Becca Good, Renee’s partner, spoke emotionally at a press conference, describing the incident as the destruction of their “entire universe” and highlighting the profound impact on their three children.
Initial reactions from President Trump blamed Good’s actions, claiming she “violently, willfully, and viciously ran over the ICE officer.” However, witnesses disputed this account, and the incident, which occurred during a traffic stop on January 7, sparked significant protests in Minneapolis. The intensity of these protests escalated after another resident, Alex Pretti, was killed by immigration agents later that month.
In response to the public outcry, federal agents were later withdrawn from the city, and the official leading the operation was removed from his post. Despite these actions, Good’s brother, Brent Ganger, expressed that “no meaningful change has occurred” since her death, emphasizing the family’s pursuit of accountability.
Good’s mother testified before Congress, stating that while she voted for President Trump believing agents were there to protect citizens, her Christian faith compels her to seek accountability rather than simple forgiveness. The lawsuits cite the Federal Tort Claims Act, which permits individuals to sue the government for negligence by federal employees.
