The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has inaugurated Bulungibwansi Week, a significant annual initiative by the Buganda Kingdom dedicated to fostering cleanliness, environmental stewardship, and cooperation with local governance structures.

Speaking at Mengo Market, Mayiga emphasized the critical link between public sanitation and health. He decried the prevalent practice of dumping waste in public areas, warning that such actions directly contribute to the proliferation of diseases and negatively impact the environment.

“Bulungibwansi is important because it reminds our people of their responsibility to keep their homes, communities and public places clean. Cleanliness is essential in preventing diseases and protecting our environment,” stated Mayiga.

He urged leaders to actively identify and hold accountable individuals caught discarding garbage in unauthorized public spaces. Furthermore, Mayiga stressed the importance of instilling values of hygiene and cleanliness in children from a young age.

The Bulungibwansi Week activities serve as a precursor to the main Buganda Kingdom commemoration on October 8th. The Katikkiro also took the opportunity to caution traders in Kabaka-owned markets against disrespecting the appointed leadership, encouraging them to work collaboratively with market managers.

Minister for Bulungibwansi and Environment, Owek. Hajat Mariam Mayanja Nkalubo, outlined the planned activities for the week. Representatives from Rexba Limited, the managers of Buganda Kingdom markets, highlighted their achievements and commitment to improving market conditions. The head of Mengo Market, Jude Kizito Namukangula, expressed gratitude to the Kabaka for the market’s establishment, noting its positive impact on traders’ working conditions.

The main commemoration event will take place on October 8, 2026, in Ggombe Sub-county, Kyaddondo County.
