Experts in mental health are sounding the alarm about the increasing prevalence of psychological distress among Uganda’s youth. A confluence of pressures, including familial expectations, the struggle for employment, substance misuse, social isolation, and generational divides, are contributing to a significant burden on young people’s well-being.

Many young individuals are reportedly suffering in silence due to the persistent stigma surrounding mental health issues and a lack of safe spaces for open discussion. This was a key theme at the recent “Generation Connect” dialogue in Kampala, an event organized by Nziza Consults.

The dialogue brought together youth, parents, and mental health professionals to foster intergenerational understanding and identify strategies to support young people. Allen Sanyu, Founder of Nziza Consults, highlighted the initiative’s aim to create an environment for honest conversations about well-being and relationships, especially where parental communication has faltered.

Ben Kigozi, a Mental Health and Learning Disability Specialist, stressed the importance of empathy, urging families to understand the root causes of behaviors like defiance or aggression, which may signal underlying distress. He encouraged the creation of safe, supportive home environments where young people feel comfortable seeking help.

Substance abuse among youth remains a critical concern. A study indicated that a notable percentage of secondary school student leaders in Kampala had experience with alcohol or drug use. Experts like psychologist Dr. Kiyingi Frank Pio emphasize the need for proactive mental health strategies, focusing on prevention, emotional literacy, and building strong support systems, rather than solely reacting to crises.

The “Generation Connect” event promoted practical communication techniques, encouraging active listening, validation of feelings, and collaborative problem-solving. Organizers stressed that bridging the generational gap necessitates mutual understanding and the creation of judgment-free spaces for discussing mental health.
