Sudan stands as a crucial export destination for Uganda, with annual earnings estimated at around $800 million, according to insights from a Ugandan trader operating in the country.

Despite the persistent conflict in Sudan, Ugandan businesses continue to supply essential commodities, particularly food items, capitalizing on well-established commercial relationships. This trade flow has persisted even amidst the challenging security situation.

Twaha Uthman Musa Kajaaya, a trader who has resided in Sudan for 17 years, highlighted the significant Ugandan presence in Sudan, particularly at the Gumbo Market. He stated that this market, largely supplied by Ugandan goods, contributes substantially to the nation’s export revenue.

Kajaaya also commended the presence of the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) in Sudan, noting that their role in maintaining security has been instrumental in enabling Ugandan traders to operate effectively and conduct their businesses without major disruptions.

To further bolster trade, Kajaaya urged the Ugandan government to prioritize the rehabilitation of the Nimule road, identifying it as a vital artery for the transport of goods to Sudan. Additionally, he called for the establishment of a Ugandan bank in Sudan to streamline financial transactions for traders.

Ugandan traders and farmers have organized themselves under an association known as the Farmers Association Market Vendors and Manufacturers (FAMMS). This group aims to foster smoother business operations and mutual support among its members.

Key exports from Uganda to Sudan include staple foods such as posho (maize flour), matooke (bananas), beans, and maize, underscoring the importance of agricultural products in this bilateral trade.
