Ugandan passport holders planning short visits to South Africa can now conveniently apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation (eTA) online. This significant change was announced by the South African High Commission in Kampala via a diplomatic note to Uganda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on September 29, 2026.
The eTA is applicable for ordinary short visits, including tourism, holidays, and short-term business activities. This new online system aims to replace the previous, more cumbersome traditional visa application process for these types of trips.
Previously, travellers might have faced multiple trips to the capital and additional administrative hurdles. The introduction of the eTA is expected to significantly reduce the time and expenses associated with preparing for eligible short trips to South Africa.
However, travellers are reminded that securing an eTA does not guarantee entry into South Africa. All visitors must still fulfill the country’s standard immigration and entry requirements upon arrival.
The South African High Commission has requested that Uganda’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs disseminate this information to relevant government bodies, airlines, and the general public. Applications for the eTA can be submitted via the South African Department of Home Affairs online portal, with support available through contacts provided by the High Commission.
This development follows the extension of South Africa’s Electronic Travel Authorisation regime to include holders of Ugandan passports.
