Police in the Kyankwanzi District are investigating a shooting incident that resulted in the death of a 44-year-old man. The deceased, identified as Barushimana Asuman, a peasant from Gayaza Sub-county, was allegedly shot by officers attempting to arrest him on charges of threatening violence and assault.
The incident occurred on September 26, 2026, when two police officers approached Barushimana at his home. According to police reports, Barushimana resisted arrest, first by brandishing a spear at the officers, and then by throwing stones. During this confrontation, Sergeant Okongo Stephen sustained injuries.
Police stated that Barushimana then retreated into his house, emerging with two pangas and a hammer. Despite warnings and warning shots fired by the officers in an attempt to stop him, Barushimana reportedly continued to advance. Sergeant Okongo, who was already injured, then shot Barushimana in the right leg.
Barushimana was transported to Gayaza Health Centre III for medical attention but succumbed to his injuries several hours later. The police were notified of the death early on September 27, 2026. Investigations are underway, with crime scene officers having documented the scene and collected witness statements.
An SMG rifle and ammunition were recovered as exhibits. One police officer has been arrested as part of the ongoing inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the shooting and subsequent death.
