An unexpected turn of events saw a flydubai flight bound for Tel Aviv diverted to Saudi Arabia after its pilots reportedly engaged in a physical altercation. The incident occurred on Flydubai Flight FZ1073, which was en route from Dubai to Israel on Wednesday.
While passing over Jordanian airspace, the Boeing 737 aircraft began transmitting emergency signals. Flight-tracking data indicated a general emergency signal was followed by another suggesting possible unlawful interference, before a final general emergency signal was sent. The plane eventually landed at Tabuk airport in northwestern Saudi Arabia.
Contrary to initial concerns, an Israeli official stated that the diversion was not believed to be a hijacking. Instead, an Israeli official, speaking anonymously, revealed that the emergency signals were activated after the pilots became involved in a physical fight.
The airline confirmed the flight experienced an “incident” and diverted to Tabuk, assuring that all passengers were safe and accounted for. However, details regarding the specific nature of the “incident” or whether the pilots intentionally transmitted the signals remain unclear.
One passenger’s mother reported hearing screaming and a description of a violent encounter involving a knife, leading to a pilot being on the floor with visible blood. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was briefed on the situation, and his office confirmed it was “under control,” with efforts underway to return Israeli passengers home.
This diversion highlights the sensitive diplomatic landscape, as Israel and Saudi Arabia do not have official diplomatic relations. This is not the first time a flight between the UAE and Israel has landed in Saudi Arabia, with a similar medical emergency diversion occurring in Riyadh in September 2025.
