MPs Sound Alarm on Escalating Violence in Kiruhura and Kazo

Parliamentarians have brought to light a disturbing spate of brutal killings occurring in Kiruhura and Kazo districts, with reports indicating that a minimum of 15 individuals have lost their lives in recent weeks.

Hon. Genesio Tumuramye, representing Kashongi County, informed the House that five people, including a child, were murdered in their homes in Kitura County within the last month. He urged the Ministry of Internal Affairs and security agencies to launch a thorough investigation into these incidents and to uncover the underlying causes.

Adding to the alarm, Hon. Dan Atwijukire of Kazo County detailed an even more dire situation in his constituency. Between August 17th and September 27th, 2026, ten people were killed. Atwijukire highlighted that six victims were bludgeoned with hammers, while others met violent ends through stabbing, strangulation, and other brutal methods, with women and young children appearing to be the primary targets.

Atwijukire cited a case where suspects confessed to murdering an elderly woman after learning she had received a significant sum of money, which they then stole. Despite arrests, the killings have persisted, prompting Atwijukire to call for a high-level meeting in the affected areas to restore confidence and address the pervasive insecurity.

Responding to the concerns, the Second Deputy Prime Minister, Dr. Crispus Kiyonga, extended the government’s condolences and assured that financial assistance, typically provided by the President to affected families during such tragic events, would be extended. However, he also stressed the crucial role of community vigilance, stating that security forces alone cannot prevent every act of violence. He urged residents to collaborate with police and the army to enhance security and bring the killings to an end.
