Man Fatally Shot by Police in Kyankwanzi After Alleged Attack

Police in Kyankwanzi district have reported the fatal shooting of a 40-year-old man, Aduman Barushimana. The incident occurred when officers from Gayaza police station attempted to arrest Barushimana at his home in Gayaza East, Gayaza Sub-county.

According to Wamala Regional Police spokesperson Lameck Kigozi, Barushimana became violent upon the officers’ arrival. He allegedly threatened them with a spear, which they narrowly avoided, and then began throwing stones, injuring Sergeant Stephen Okongo.

Kigozi stated that Barushimana then retreated into his house, emerging with two pangas and a hammer. He reportedly charged at the officers, further injuring Sgt. Okongo during the confrontation.

Despite police firing warning shots, Barushimana continued to advance, leading the officers to shoot him in the right leg. He fell and was transported to Gayaza Health Centre III, where he later died.

An investigation into the death by shooting has been launched. Police have recovered an SMG rifle and ammunition as exhibits. Barushimana’s body has been returned to his family for burial.
