Government Addresses Reports of Incommunicado Detentions

Government Chief Whip Jane Ruth Aceng has assured Parliament that the executive is taking action on allegations of individuals being held incommunicado. This comes after legislators renewed calls for security agencies to provide accountability for the whereabouts of detained persons.
MP Paul Mwiru for Jinja South Division East brought the issue to the forefront, highlighting the case of Baba TV journalist Eria Jjengo, who was allegedly taken from his workplace and has not been produced in court. Mwiru noted that Jjengo’s disappearance was reported to police and has drawn attention from the Uganda Journalists Association and Baba TV.
Aceng revealed that the Ministry of Internal Affairs had previously requested a list of such cases from the Leader of the Opposition. This list has now been submitted to the ministry for a thorough follow-up. She committed to including the newly raised case of Eria Jjengo in the ongoing investigations.
Second Deputy Prime Minister, Hon. Crispus Kiyonga, expressed the government’s willingness to collaborate with Hon. Mwiru to ascertain the facts and take necessary steps. Speaker Jacob Marksons Oboth commended the government’s responsive approach, emphasizing it as the productive engagement expected between the legislative and executive branches.
