The November 2022 peace agreement between the Ethiopian federal government and the Tigray People’s Liberation Front (TPLF) has come under severe strain, with reports indicating a breakdown in trust and implementation. Initially hailed as a diplomatic triumph, the deal sought to end a brutal two-year conflict that caused widespread devastation and a severe humanitarian crisis.
However, concerns are mounting that the foundational elements of the agreement are not being met. Key among these is the disarmament of non-TPLF forces operating in Tigray, a crucial step for lasting peace and security. The continued presence of these groups, often linked to neighboring regions, fuels local grievances and complicates the disarmament process.
Furthermore, the perceived slow pace of political reforms and the lack of accountability for alleged atrocities committed during the war are also contributing to the current disquiet. For the people of Tigray, lasting peace hinges not only on the cessation of hostilities but also on justice and the restoration of normalcy, including the return of displaced populations and the rebuilding of devastated infrastructure.
The situation has been further exacerbated by the emergence of a new alliance of seven armed factions. These groups, while diverse in their specific grievances, are collectively challenging Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed’s administration. Their consolidation signals a widening dissatisfaction with the current political landscape and the perceived failures of the peace process, raising alarms about potential future conflicts.
The international community, which invested heavily in brokering the peace deal, is closely monitoring these developments. The fragility of the agreement underscores the complex challenges of post-conflict reconciliation in Ethiopia and the need for sustained political will and inclusive dialogue to achieve sustainable peace.
