Christine Asekenye, a prominent figure in Ugandan volleyball, has carved a unique path by excelling in both the competitive world of sports and the creative realm of professional cooking.

From her early days in Kumi, Asekenye’s volleyball journey began in primary school, leading her to prominent institutions like Kinaawa High School and eventually to the KCCA Volleyball Club. Her skills were further honed as a key player for the Lady Volleyball Cranes, most recently participating in the CAVB Women’s African Nations Championship in Nairobi.

Beyond the court, Asekenye pursued her passion for cooking, graduating from Culinary School Uganda. She describes her dual career as demanding but manageable through strict planning, discipline, and significant sacrifice. Her typical day often starts before dawn with volleyball training, followed by long hours in the kitchen, a schedule that tests her physical and mental endurance.

Asekenye credits her culinary background with enhancing her athletic performance. Understanding nutrition allows her to fuel her body effectively for training and recovery, making her a more informed and potentially better athlete. She emphasizes that food is not just about taste but about providing the necessary energy and support for demanding physical activity.

Representing Uganda on the national volleyball team has been a dream come true for Asekenye, a moment she cherishes deeply. As a libero, she thrives on the responsibility of commanding the backcourt, making crucial saves that can shift the momentum of a game. This role requires bravery, constant communication, and a deep understanding of the sport.

Looking ahead, Asekenye aims to elevate both her volleyball career, with aspirations to help KCCA become an East African powerhouse and the Lady Volleyball Cranes qualify for major international competitions. In the culinary world, she dreams of becoming an Executive Chef and opening her own restaurant to support other women. Her advice to young girls is to pursue education alongside sports, emphasizing that resilience, discipline, and self-belief are key to achieving success in any field.
