For more than ten years, Agnes Kirabo has been a persistent voice advocating for food rights in Uganda. As the Executive Director of the Food Rights Alliance (FRA), she has tirelessly worked to elevate the issue from a mere matter of food security to a fundamental human right.
Kirabo’s journey began with a deep understanding that access to adequate food is not just about availability but also about affordability, accessibility, and dignity. She recognized that many Ugandans, particularly smallholder farmers and vulnerable populations, faced systemic challenges in securing their basic nutritional needs.
Under her leadership, the FRA has engaged in extensive advocacy, policy analysis, and community mobilization. This has involved challenging existing agricultural policies and land tenure systems that often disadvantage small-scale producers and consumers. Kirabo has consistently pushed for legislative frameworks that protect and promote the right to food for all.
Her work has involved collaborating with various stakeholders, including government bodies, civil society organizations, and international development partners. Through dialogue and pressure, Kirabo and the FRA have aimed to influence national policies and practices to ensure that food security is addressed through a human rights lens.
Kirabo’s commitment has been instrumental in shifting the discourse, making food rights a more prominent topic in national development discussions. Her efforts highlight the crucial link between food, health, education, and overall economic well-being, advocating for a more just and equitable food system in Uganda.
