Worker's Death at Buikwe Assembly Plant Sparks Safety Concerns

Tragedy has struck at the Modern Automobile vehicle assembly plant in Buikwe District, where 20-year-old mechanic Sadam Mugwere lost his life while reportedly servicing a vehicle. The incident has sent shockwaves through the community, prompting Mugwere’s family to seek a thorough explanation of the circumstances surrounding his untimely death.

MMP Park Corporate Affairs Manager, Francis Baganzi, confirmed the fatality and stated the company has provided Shs4 million to the family for burial expenses. He assured that the company is cooperating with the ongoing police investigation and that insurance will handle further compensation after the police report is finalized.

However, concerns linger among the deceased’s relatives and colleagues. Eria Mulasi, a family friend, expressed apprehension about the company’s continued cooperation post-burial and questioned the availability and use of adequate personal protective equipment (PPE) at the time of the incident. “We believe that if the right protective equipment had been available and used, this could perhaps have been prevented,” Mulasi remarked, echoing sentiments about PPE potentially being used more for show than for actual worker safety.

These concerns are amplified by statements from other workers within the industrial park. Sharon Aluma, an employee, highlighted systemic issues including low wages and a lack of sufficient safety gear. She also alleged a pattern of opaque handling of industrial accidents, where injured or deceased workers are often moved to external facilities before families are fully informed, with compensation often proving elusive.

The police have confirmed an active inquiry into the incident, with Ssezibwa Regional Police Spokesperson Hellen Butoto stating that details will be shared upon completion of the official report. As of now, no formal post-mortem or investigative findings have been released.
