In a significant shift within Uganda’s transportation sector, women are increasingly making their mark as taxi drivers and conductors, roles traditionally held by men. This movement is fueled by a desire for economic independence and the encouragement to pursue diverse career paths.

Sandra Khasalamwa, Chairperson of Female Taxi Drivers and Conductors Uganda, highlighted this trend on a recent television program. She stated that the country now boasts over 60 female taxi drivers, with many more women actively learning to drive and enter the profession.

Khasalamwa emphasized the importance of embracing work and earning one’s own income, sharing her personal fulfillment in being able to support herself and her family through her work. She urged women to overcome laziness and step out of their comfort zones.

Despite their progress, female drivers and conductors face unique hurdles. Khasalamwa noted challenges such as handling heavy luggage, intense competition within the industry, and navigating workplace dynamics, including unwanted romantic advances from male colleagues.

Looking ahead, the organization aims to expand its reach, actively recruiting more women from all regions of Uganda to join the ranks of female taxi professionals. They are committed to fostering a more inclusive environment within the industry.
