Uganda Losing Export Markets Due to Supply Chain Gaps, Warns Expert

Uganda is missing out on valuable export markets because it struggles to meet consistent supply demands for its products. Uganda faces significant challenges in capitalizing on its export potential, with a recurring problem of failing to meet market demands due to supply chain deficiencies. This inability to consistently deliver products means the country is losing out on lucrative opportunities in international markets.

The agricultural sector, while robust and a major employer and export earner, continues to export primary commodities in their raw form. This limits the value Uganda derives from its produce, as processed goods command higher prices.

Experts point to a need for strengthening the nation’s standards infrastructure. This would ensure that Ugandan products meet the stringent requirements of more demanding and better-paying markets. Without this, the country remains perpetually described as “promising” but failing to achieve its full economic potential.

The heavy concentration of exports in just gold and coffee also presents a vulnerability. While these sectors have seen revenue surges, this reliance underscores the broader issue of insufficient diversification and value addition across the economy.

Addressing these supply-side constraints and investing in processing capabilities are crucial steps for Uganda to move beyond being a supplier of raw materials and secure its position in high-value global markets. The country needs to bridge the gap between its abundant resources and the capacity to deliver finished, quality products consistently.
