The ongoing succession dispute in the Tooro Kingdom has taken a new turn as legal challenges move from an attempted coronation halt to the core of the selection process. Lawyers representing two concerned subjects of the kingdom and a Kampala-based advocacy group, Thomas and Michael Advocates, revealed their intention to concentrate on the substantive lawsuit that questions the legitimacy of Prince Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I’s appointment as the new Omukama.

This strategic shift comes after a last-minute effort to obtain an interim injunction from the Fort Portal High Court to prevent the coronation ceremony, scheduled for Tuesday, September 29, 2026, was unsuccessful. The court application could not be heard in time to halt the proceedings.

The main suit, according to court filings, argues that the selection process for the new king deviated from the explicitly stated wishes of the late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV. The petitioners are seeking a court order to compel the Tooro Queen Mother, Best Kemigisa, who is named as a co-defendant, to reveal details about an alleged son left behind by the late monarch.

While the coronation ceremony proceeded as planned on September 29, 2026, with Prince Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I being enthroned, the legal battles are far from over. The focus now lies on the substantive case that aims to scrutinize the procedures followed and potentially impact the future leadership of the Tooro Kingdom.
