Sahil Halai shines at Mugerwa's Captain's Putter debut

The serene setting of Lake Victoria Serena Golf Resort & Spa in Kigo was abuzz with activity as it hosted the inaugural Captain’s Putter tournament, an event spearheaded by the club’s captain, Jimmy Mugerwa.

Mugerwa, a prominent figure in Uganda’s corporate world and a recent entrant to golf, successfully blended his professional acumen with his passion for the sport. The tournament saw significant backing, with Uganda Breweries Limited (UBL) through its Johnnie Walker brand and dfcu Bank stepping in as sponsors.

“What a wonderful day!” exclaimed Mugerwa during his speech, highlighting the club’s impressive growth. He noted the club’s transition from actively seeking new members to a position where membership is highly sought after, with prospective members possibly needing to wait for future openings.

On the greens, it was Sahil Halai who dominated the proceedings, outperforming a field of about 100 golfers. Halai, the son of a Kigo property proprietor, secured a major victory, quenching a three-year desire for a significant title.

“It was an amazing round, unbelievable golf,” said Halai, who plays off a handicap of 20. He described a round where everything clicked, attributing his success partly to consistently using a four-iron off the tee. Halai’s performance translated to a score of seven-under his handicap on the par-72 course.

The event also featured an announcement from Kigo’s Director of Golf, Theodore van Rooyen, who shared a congratulatory message from golf legend Ernie Els for Mugerwa. Future plans for the course were also hinted at, with Kigo set to host the prestigious Uganda Golf Open in 2027.

Various category winners were recognized, including Maria Odido (Senior Ladies), Bruce Martin (Senior Men), and Allan Atuhairwe (Guest Winner), alongside group winners and special award recipients.
