Manchester United icon Wayne Rooney has weighed in on the ongoing investigation into Manchester City’s alleged Premier League financial rule breaches. The former England captain, who was part of the United side that famously lost the title to City on goal difference in 2012, stated his disagreement with the idea of expunging City’s league titles.
Rooney, speaking in his capacity as a pundit, suggested that while punishments are necessary if City are found guilty, stripping them of past glories might not be the appropriate course of action. He emphasized that the league had already moved on and that such a drastic measure could set a difficult precedent for the sport.
The controversy stems from numerous charges brought against Manchester City by the Premier League regarding alleged financial irregularities over a nine-year period. These charges could potentially lead to severe sanctions if the club is found to have violated the rules.
However, Rooney’s stance suggests a belief in proportional consequences. He indicated that while penalties should be imposed, they should be fair and reflect the severity of any proven offenses, rather than resorting to the most extreme measure of title revocation. The footballing world awaits the outcome of the Premier League’s independent commission.
