Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi, a prominent leader within the National Unity Platform (NUP), has been released on bail from the Butambala Chief Magistrate’s Court. Kivumbi, who holds the position of Deputy President for Buganda within the NUP, had been in custody for several weeks on charges of inciting violence and managing an unlawful society.

This latest bail comes after a period of legal challenges, including a previous arrest shortly after being granted bail by the International Crimes Division of the High Court in a separate terrorism-related case. NUP Deputy Secretary General Lewis Rubongoya expressed relief at Kivumbi’s release but voiced concerns about potential re-arrest, referencing the previous incident.

Kivumbi had previously spent nearly six months on remand before the High Court granted him cash bail of Shs10 million in July, along with sixteen co-accused. However, he was reportedly intercepted by security operatives shortly after his release and his whereabouts were unknown for several days, causing alarm among his legal team and political allies.

He later reappeared at Nateete Police Station before being moved to Butambala to face the new charges. The prosecution alleges that on July 9, 2026, Kivumbi addressed a gathering and incited violence against government officials and encouraged the overthrow of the government. He is also accused of organizing support for such actions.

These charges are distinct from the terrorism case, which involves allegations stemming from violence after the January 2026 general elections, including attacks on police stations and electoral commission offices. Kivumbi and his co-accused have denied all allegations in both cases. His release marks a new phase in a legal journey marked by detention, bail, and subsequent arrests.

Kivumbi will continue to face these charges while out on bail from the Butambala Chief Magistrate’s Court.
