Muwanga Kivumbi Granted Bail After Extended Custody

National Unity Platform (NUP) deputy president, Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi, has been granted bail by the Butambala grade one magistrate court. This release follows a cumulative detention period of approximately 250 days, stemming from his arrest after the January 2026 elections.
Magistrate Aminah Wahab set Kivumbi’s bail at Shs 3 million in cash, with his sureties required to post non-cash bonds of Shs 2 million each. Additionally, Kivumbi has been ordered to surrender his travel documents and is restricted from traveling to Butambala, except for family events.
Kivumbi’s latest arrest occurred in July 2026, where he was charged with inciting violence and managing an unlawful society. The prosecution had opposed his bail, citing potential risks to public peace and security. However, his legal team, led by Samuel Muyizzi Mulindwa, asserted his right to bail and his history of court compliance.
The charges stem from allegations that Kivumbi made statements encouraging public unrest against the government during a July gathering in Butambala. He maintains his innocence, asserting the charges are politically motivated.
This recent arrest followed Kivumbi’s release on bail in a separate terrorism case handled by the International Crimes Division of the High Court. He was re-arrested shortly after securing that bail, facing the new charges in Butambala.
The terrorism case involves accusations of involvement in election-related violence during the January 2026 elections, including alleged attacks on a police station and destruction of property. The aftermath of this violence reportedly led to seven deaths at Kivumbi’s home.
Kivumbi’s release on bail was met with jubilation from his family, NUP colleagues, and supporters, including prominent figures like Leader of the Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi and NUP Secretary General David Lewis Rubongoya. Kivumbi is scheduled to appear in court again on October 29, 2026, for further proceedings.
