Museveni Seeks Japanese Investment in Agro-Processing and Road Equipment
President Yoweri Museveni has urged Japan to increase investment in Uganda's agro-processing sector and provide road construction equipment to local governments. President Yoweri Museveni is actively seeking increased Japanese investment in Uganda’s agro-processing industry, aiming to boost value addition and create jobs. During a meeting at State House Entebbe with a delegation led by Ambassador Takahashi Misako, Director General for African Affairs at Japan’s Foreign Ministry, the President also requested support in the form of road construction equipment for local governments.
President Museveni highlighted the importance of equipping each local government with essential machinery like graders, trucks, and compactors, noting Uganda’s past successful procurement of equipment from Komatsu. He expressed a desire to meet directly with Japanese firms operating in Uganda to understand and resolve any challenges they face, ensuring a conducive business environment.
Ambassador Misako affirmed Japan’s continued commitment to supporting Uganda through various initiatives, including infrastructure development, human resource training, education, health, and refugee programs. Japan is considering further assistance for projects like the Kampala Flyover and road upgrades. The Ambassador also invited President Museveni to the groundbreaking ceremony for the Karuma Bridge in November.
She acknowledged Uganda’s significant role in hosting refugees and its contributions to regional stability. The Ambassador noted that 17 Japanese companies are currently active in Uganda across sectors such as transport, health, manufacturing, and agriculture, and emphasized the need for a fair business climate to attract further investment and foster economic growth. Japan has a strong history of educational and technical support for Uganda, with many Ugandans having studied in Japan or benefited from JICA programs and volunteer deployments.
