Landlady, Couple Perish in Nansana Arson Fire

Tragedy struck in Nansana West 1A, Wakiso District, on Monday morning when a fire engulfed a residential building, resulting in the deaths of three individuals. The deceased have been identified as tenants Bulali Isabire and Annet Namulondo, a couple, and their landlady, Ms. Violet Nanyombi.

According to witnesses, the incident began around midnight with a loud explosion, seemingly originating from the landlady’s room. The fire rapidly spread, engulfing multiple rental units within the house, which accommodated seven tenants and Ms. Nanyombi.

Survivors recounted a harrowing escape, with some forced to flee through windows as thick smoke and flames consumed the structure. Mr. Stephen Bazibu, a tenant, reported hearing the explosion shortly after Ms. Nanyombi allegedly sent her daughter away from her room with a bag of belongings and a contact number.

Police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the fire and are treating it as suspected arson. A letter found at the scene indicates the fire was intentional. Investigators also noted that some occupants may have been locked out prior to the blaze, suggesting possible foul play.

Local leaders confirmed that Ms. Nanyombi had recently prepared a Will, distributing her property, which she stated belonged to her and her two children. It is understood she had a bank loan she was servicing. Other residents reported seeing the landlady carrying a container, believed to contain petrol, the day before the incident. The police fire brigade arrived two hours after the initial response, by which time the three victims were deceased.
