Kyangwali Coaches Embrace Inclusive Sports Initiative

Coaches based in Uganda’s Kyangwali Refugee Settlement are stepping up to champion inclusivity in sports, particularly through their involvement with the Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools initiative. This program actively seeks to integrate individuals with intellectual disabilities into school sports and activities.

Ten schools within the settlement are already part of this groundbreaking initiative. The coaches are undergoing training to better understand and implement inclusive practices, ensuring that all students, regardless of their abilities, have the opportunity to participate and thrive in athletic pursuits.

The Special Olympics Unified Champion Schools program emphasizes a “Unified Sports” model, where athletes with and without intellectual disabilities train and compete together. This approach not only promotes physical fitness but also cultivates social skills, understanding, and acceptance among participants.

This effort in Kyangwali is part of a broader push to make sports a more accessible and equitable avenue for development and community building within refugee settings. By empowering local coaches with the necessary skills and resources, the program aims to create sustainable, inclusive environments that benefit the entire student population.
