Kabale Leaders Urge Expansion of ICT Hubs Following Digital Center Launch

Kabale Municipality leaders have emphasized the need for additional free ICT centers to support the burgeoning digital skills gap among students in tertiary and secondary institutions. This call comes after the recent commissioning of a multi-million shilling digital community center at Kabale Public Library.
The new hub, a collaboration between American Tower Corporation-Uganda (ATC-Uganda) and the National Library of Uganda, offers crucial services like free computer literacy training and internet access to all community members.
“We welcome this establishment, but it is our wish that such facilities are established in all three divisions of Kabale Municipality to serve the increased need for ICT services,” stated Mr Hassan Rwamango, Principal Assistant Town Clerk for Southern Division. He noted that the current facility is often overcrowded, highlighting the municipality’s readiness to partner with investors interested in expanding ICT infrastructure.
Echoing these sentiments, Mr Michael Kyakashari, Kabale Deputy Resident District Commissioner, believes that accessible internet and computer facilities will foster innovation, combat youth unemployment, and contribute to economic growth. He encouraged other investors to replicate this initiative, citing examples of youth already developing digital solutions for community challenges.
Ms Dorothy Ssemanda, CEO of ATC-Uganda, explained that the center is part of the company’s commitment to bridging the digital divide. The Kabale center has already benefited over 3,000 individuals since 2024, contributing to ATC-Uganda’s nationwide network of 84 digital centers.
Beneficiaries like 62-year-old Mr Alfred Mujuni shared success stories, with his digital literacy certificate from the center helping him secure employment and a leadership role in his local council.
The U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires, Mr Mikael Cleverley, lauded ATC-Uganda’s investment, urging the community to utilize the center for innovation and to protect the vital telecommunication infrastructure.
