Fort Portal Under Tight Security for Tooro King-Designate Coronation

Fort Portal City is abuzz with preparations for the coronation of Prince Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I, the King-designate of Tooro Kingdom. To ensure a smooth and secure ceremony, law enforcement agencies have significantly heightened security across the city.

The security operation, a collaborative effort between the Uganda Police Force, the Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), the Special Forces Command (SFC), and intelligence services, aims to guarantee the safety of the expected thousands of attendees.

Rwenzori West regional police spokesperson, Vincent Twesige, detailed the security arrangements, which began with road closures and traffic diversions commencing Monday evening for a night procession. Specific routes, such as Bwamba Road, were cordoned off to facilitate the procession from Rwengoma Palace to Karuziika Palace.

Further restrictions are scheduled for Tuesday, coinciding with a religious service at St John’s Cathedral. Several roads leading to the cathedral will be closed from early morning. Motorists are advised to plan their journeys accordingly, with designated parking areas and alternative routes provided for those traveling to and from different directions.

Security personnel will conduct thorough screening at key locations, including the palace and the cathedral. Residents and visitors are urged to cooperate with security checks and refrain from carrying sensitive items. Police have also warned of potential pickpockets and phone snatchers, emphasizing the need for vigilance.

Intelligence teams are operating alongside uniformed officers. In addition to security deployments, fire tenders and rescue teams are on standby. Journalists covering the event are required to obtain accreditation through the Uganda Media Centre. The coronation follows the passing and subsequent burial of the previous Omukama, Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.

This comprehensive security plan underscores the importance of the coronation event for the Tooro Kingdom and its people. Authorities are working closely with local administrative offices to ensure all guidelines are followed, promoting a peaceful celebration.
