Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I Crowned 15th Omukama of Tooro, Ushering in New Era

A new dawn has broken for the Tooro Kingdom with the official coronation of His Royal Highness Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I as its 15th Omukama. The momentous ceremony, held at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal, was presided over by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, drawing a massive crowd of Tooro subjects and distinguished guests from across Uganda and beyond.

The coronation signifies a fresh beginning for the kingdom, following the recent passing of the revered Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, who reigned for 31 years. The proceedings commenced with a solemn thanksgiving service at St. John’s Cathedral, led by Bishop Reuben Kisembo, before transitioning to the palace for the main event.

At Karuziika Palace, the atmosphere vibrated with renewed energy as the royal drums, silenced during the mourning period, resounded once more. The unveiling of the lion statues served as a powerful symbol of the monarchy’s restoration and the commencement of a new reign.

President Museveni, in his address, paid a heartfelt tribute to the late King Oyo, acknowledging his significant contributions to both Tooro and Uganda. He shared a touching anecdote about a letter from the late monarch received shortly after his burial, underscoring King Oyo’s enduring spirit. Congratulating the new Omukama, President Museveni recalled his previous career as a news anchor, expressing confidence in his ability to lead.

The President reiterated his support for cultural institutions, emphasizing their crucial role in preserving societal values and indigenous knowledge that may not be fully captured by modern political systems. He highlighted the importance of protecting indigenous languages, cultural practices, and traditional science, citing examples such as the preservation of Ankole long-horned cattle.

In his inaugural address, Omukama Nyabongo I pledged an inclusive reign, committed to serving all people of Tooro while upholding the kingdom’s rich culture and traditions. He emphasized collaboration with the central government for national development and vowed to promote peace and wealth creation.

The peaceful transition was lauded by various leaders, including Minister of Tourism, Wildlife and Antiquities, Hon. Tom Butime, and the Omujwera Musuuga, Charles Kamurasi, who formally handed over authority to the new king. The event concluded with vibrant celebrations, marking the formal end of the mourning period for King Oyo and the joyful embrace of a new era under Omukama Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I.
