Edward Nyabongo I Crowned Tooro King Amid Succession Dispute

Tooro Kingdom has officially welcomed its 13th monarch, King Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I, who was crowned in a ceremony steeped in tradition and following a significant succession rift. The 56-year-old royal, a cousin to the late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, ascended to the throne after a selection process by a 21-member committee from the royal Babiito clan.

King Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I, formerly a news anchor and editor with Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC), adopted his royal name during an overnight installation at the Karuziika Royal Palace. The elaborate rituals included the symbolic ceremonial slaughter of a bull and the sprinkling of a hen’s blood, culminating in a mock battle for the crown. Traditional regalia, including spears and drums that had been turned upside down to signify mourning, were restored to their upright positions, signaling the end of the official mourning period.

The coronation proceeded despite objections from the late King Oyo’s mother and sister, who claimed the late monarch had a young son and a written will naming the child as heir. However, the head of the royal Babiito clan dismissed these claims, asserting that the clan followed established Batooro customs in choosing King Edward.

The late King Oyo passed away on August 27 from angiosarcoma, an aggressive form of cancer, and was buried on September 12. His reign, which began when he was just three years old in 1995, had previously captured global attention.

Local residents expressed immense joy and actively participated in preparations for the coronation, highlighting the cultural significance of the event. The new King’s ascent ushers in a new era for Tooro, with the Prime Minister extending congratulations and prayers for his wise and compassionate leadership.
