Wakiso Councillors Told to Prioritize Service Over Politics

Wakiso District councillors have received a strong directive to prioritize service delivery and district development over personal ambitions and political infighting. During an induction session in Hoima City, officials from the Ministry of Local Government emphasized the need for responsible leadership.

Dominic Kashaki, a Local Government Governance Specialist, cautioned councillors against seeking popularity and creating divisions, noting that such tendencies undermine public trust and effective governance. He stressed that their positions are opportunities to serve, not platforms for personal gain.

Kashaki urged the councillors to identify opportunities for improving services and accelerating development in Wakiso, highlighting the district’s significant untapped potential. He also advised them on remuneration, suggesting that any proposals for allowance increases should be practical and well-justified.

Assumpta Ikiriza Tibamwenda, a Technical Adviser on Local Economic Development, pointed out that Wakiso’s proximity to Kampala and its existing infrastructure offer substantial avenues for revenue generation. She suggested leveraging Parliament, tourism sites, and Entebbe International Airport to boost the district’s economy.

Tibamwenda encouraged councillors to move past disputes and focus on lobbying, advocacy, attracting investment, and promoting tourism. She also proposed establishing learning centers and partnerships with universities to foster innovative economic activities, such as peri-urban and satellite farming, which could enhance the district’s financial independence.

Eugene Gerald Ssemakula, a Local Council trainer, underscored the importance of adhering to administrative procedures and respecting institutional mandates. He advised politicians and technical officers to operate within their defined roles to prevent conflicts and ensure smooth functioning of the local government. Ssemakula concluded by emphasizing that councillors’ strength lies in collective decision-making and teamwork for effective service delivery.
