UNBS Cracks Down on Illicit Alcohol in Kampala, Seizing Over 26,000 Litres

In a decisive move against substandard products, the Uganda National Bureau of Standards (UNBS) has seized a substantial volume of illicit alcohol and unlabelled spirits within Kampala. The operation, which focused on areas like Nakulabye and Kiwunya, was prompted by numerous consumer complaints regarding the prevalence of unsafe alcoholic drinks on the market.

During the surveillance, officials collected a total of 17,770 litres of illicit alcohol. Alongside this, approximately 8,500 litres of neutral spirit, lacking proper labelling, were also confiscated. The crackdown also targeted uncertified gin, with about 600 small bottles, each 200ml, being removed from circulation. Popular brands found to be non-compliant included Timing, Soccer/Socar, Kyakabi, Revo, and Cheza.

Significant seizures were reported at several business premises. Happy Emmanuels Stores yielded the largest haul, with 9,120 litres of illicit alcohol and 4,500 litres of neutral spirit discovered. Fred Asiimwe’s Store was found to be holding 2,320 litres of illegal alcohol and around 4,000 litres of unlabelled spirit. Other locations, including Harriets Shop, Lillies Quality Suppliers, Musoke Adolf Shop, and Nakulabye Super Waragi and Spirit, also contributed to the total confiscation.

UNBS reiterated its commitment to consumer protection, emphasizing the importance of verifying product labels and certification marks before purchase. The agency urged the public to actively report any suspected non-compliant products to aid in their ongoing efforts to safeguard both consumers and the environment from hazardous and substandard goods.

This operation was conducted under the framework of the UNBS Act, Cap 210, and relevant market surveillance regulations.
