Ugandan biotechnology pioneer Dr. Matthias Magoola has been celebrated as one of Africa’s 100 most influential people. The founder of Dei BioPharma received this prestigious recognition at an event held in Kigali, Rwanda.
The award acknowledges Dr. Magoola’s significant contributions to biotechnology and his dedication to fostering self-sufficiency in medicine and vaccine production across Africa, thereby reducing the continent’s dependence on foreign imports.
The “100 Africa Most Influential Persons Awards,” now in its third year, is organized by the Business Executive Media Group in collaboration with international bodies. The 2026 theme focused on individuals shaping Africa’s socio-economic trajectory. Dr. Magoola’s citation highlighted his “visionary leadership and groundbreaking innovations” in healthcare and economic development.
Dei BioPharma is actively developing a large-scale manufacturing campus in Uganda, aiming to produce a significant portion of the region’s pharmaceutical needs. This initiative aligns with the African Union’s goal for the continent to produce at least 60% of its health products by 2040.
Dr. Magoola expressed gratitude, dedicating the award to Uganda and its leadership, particularly President Yoweri Museveni, for his consistent support of the nation’s scientists. This recognition follows other recent achievements for Dei BioPharma, including its registration as a manufacturer under the African Pooled Procurement Mechanism, enabling it to bid for continental supply contracts.
His work encompasses developing affordable treatments for diseases like cancer, HIV/AIDS, and malaria, alongside a vaccine for foot-and-mouth disease. Dr. Magoola has filed numerous patent applications in the U.S., focusing on innovative mRNA-based therapies and vaccines. He was previously honored with a Ratna Pharma Award in India and named best researcher of the year at the International Molecular Biologist Awards.
