Uganda's Kingfisher Oil Project Nears Completion with 99% of Central Processing Facility Done

Uganda’s significant oil production ambitions are drawing closer to reality, with the Central Processing Facility (CPF) at the Kingfisher Development Area (KDA) now at an advanced stage of construction.
The Petroleum Authority of Uganda (PAU) confirmed that the CPF, which serves as the central hub for collecting, separating, and treating crude oil from production wells, is 99% complete. State Minister for Economic Monitoring Sandra Santa Alum recently conducted an oversight visit to the KDA, operated by CNOOC.
During the visit, PAU officials indicated that the facility is currently undergoing pre-commissioning and commissioning. “We are getting ready for the first oil,” stated Seith Muhumuza, PAU head of stakeholder management.
The Kingfisher CPF is designed to process up to 40,000 barrels of crude oil daily. This capacity is a crucial component of Uganda’s overall oil production target, with the Tilenga project expected to contribute an additional 190,000 barrels per day.
In addition to the CPF, significant progress has been made on well drilling. Out of the planned 31 wells in the Kingfisher area, 22 have already been drilled, exceeding the 17 required for the initial phase of oil production. Preparations are underway for the completion of the remaining wells.
While the progress at Kingfisher is encouraging, Minister Alum emphasized that production from this area alone is insufficient for commercialization. “Kingfisher is not enough to help us to hit the production and the commercialisation of the oil. Meaning that we have to wait for the others, so that now we start producing oil,” she explained.
Regarding waste management, Muhumuza assured that provisions are in place, with third-party companies currently handling waste. “When we start the operation phase, we will make sure we have waste management and waste handlers,” he added.
