Tooro Kingdom Poised for Coronation of Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I

The Tooro Kingdom is abuzz with activity as it gears up for the coronation of Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma, who will be known as King Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I. The ceremony marks the enthronement of the 15th ruler of the kingdom and is set to be a grand affair held at the historic Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal City.

Final touches are being applied by contracted service providers to ensure a vibrant and memorable event. President Yoweri Museveni is expected to attend as the chief guest, a role that also signifies him as the crown bearer (Omujwara Kondo). Anticipation is high, with estimates suggesting over 50,000 people will attend the coronation, both in person and via large screens strategically placed around Fort Portal Town.

The festivities are set to begin the night before with a procession. Starting at 10 pm from Rwengoma Palace, thousands are expected to escort the new King towards Karuziika Palace, carrying torchlights. Upon reaching the main entrance, Mugabante, a traditional mock battle will symbolize the transfer of authority. Following this ritual, the public will stop, while the royal family proceeds inside for sacred ceremonies.

Inside Karuziika Palace, King Nyabongo I will participate in a series of traditional rites throughout the night. Key regalia, including the royal drums and spears, which were turned upside down following the death of the previous King Oyo, will be ritually set upright, signifying the end of mourning and the commencement of a new reign.

The following morning, a church service at St. John’s Cathedral of Ruwenzori Diocese will precede the formal coronation. Bishop Reuben Kisembo will bestow his blessing upon the King. The ceremony will then continue at Karuziika Palace, featuring speeches from dignitaries and the pivotal moment of the crowning, after which the King will perform further traditional rituals. The event will culminate in a public luncheon, encouraging attendees to wear traditional attire. The organizing committee has ensured ample catering and viewing arrangements for all guests.
