Tooro Kingdom Clarifies Title for Omukama's Mother

A joyous reception marked the arrival of Omujwera Nyina Omukama Yusta Asiimwe Kiijanangoma Amooti, mother of the Omukama-designate Prince Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I, at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal. The gathering celebrated her presence ahead of her son’s coronation as the 15th Omukama of Tooro.

While affectionately referred to as “Queen Mother” by many well-wishers, kingdom traditions and royal protocol dictate that this English title is not an accurate representation of her status. The preferred and correct designation is ‘Omujwera Nyina Omukama,’ a title that holds specific cultural significance within the Tooro Kingdom.

This distinction is crucial, as the term “Queen Mother” typically refers to a woman who was previously a queen consort (the wife of a reigning king) and subsequently becomes the mother of the current monarch. However, in the case of Omujwera Yusta Asiimwe, her position is unique and does not fit the Western definition of a queen mother.

The celebration underscored the deep respect and affection the Batooro people hold for her, regardless of the precise terminology. The arrival was a vibrant affair, with songs and ululations accompanying her motorcade, highlighting the community’s enthusiasm for the upcoming coronation and the new era it signifies for the kingdom.
