Tooro Kingdom Bars Women from King-Designate's Torchlight Procession

The upcoming coronation of Tooro King-designate Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I is set to be preceded by a significant traditional procession. However, the kingdom’s organizing committee has clarified that this specific event, scheduled for Monday night, will be exclusively for men.

Dr. Richard Rwabuhinga, head of protocol for the coronation, stated on Sunday that the procession, which involves thousands carrying reed torches from Rwengoma Palace to Karuziika Palace, is reserved for the male gender according to Tooro traditions. He urged women to abstain from participating in the 10 PM trek and instead join the public coronation ceremony on Tuesday.

“Our traditions do not allow women to be part of that journey moving to the palace on the 28th,” Dr. Rwabuhinga emphasized. He called upon women to “remain at home” for the procession but assured them they would be welcomed at the official coronation the following day.

The procession is a symbolic event, culminating at Karuziika Palace where a mock battle at the Mugabante entrance signifies the transfer of authority. While the public will observe from the entrance, the king-designate and royal family will proceed inside for further traditional rites.

The coronation ceremony itself is expected to draw notable figures, with President Yoweri Museveni slated to be the chief guest. This event follows the recent burial of the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV. The Queen Mother is also expected to arrive at the palace before the main ceremony.

Support for the coronation has been acknowledged, with a significant contribution of Shs100 million from the Chief of Defence Forces, General Muhoozi Kainerugaba, being highlighted by the organizing committee. A broader fundraising drive of Shs925 million was previously launched for the ceremony.
