Tooro King's Coronation: Women Excluded from Traditional Night Procession

As Tooro prepares to crown its new king, Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I, traditional practices are set to dictate key events. A significant aspect of these traditions involves a nocturnal procession, scheduled for Monday night, which will guide the king-designate from Rwengoma Palace to Karuziika Palace. This procession, a vital part of the pre-coronation rituals, will traverse Fort Portal City, commencing at 10 pm.
However, this particular ceremony will exclude women, a decision rooted in long-standing Tooro cultural norms governing such significant rituals. Richard Rwabuhinga, heading the protocol for the coronation’s organizing committee, clarified that this exclusion is specific to the procession. Women are fully encouraged and expected to participate in the subsequent church service and the formal coronation ceremony slated for Tuesday.
The king-designate and his entourage are anticipated to reach Karuziika Palace around 3 am on Tuesday. Upon arrival, a symbolic mock battle, known as Mugabante, will take place at the palace’s royal entrance, testing the king-designate’s readiness before he enters to ascend the throne.
Following this, various other traditional rites will be performed within the palace. These include the restoration of royal regalia, such as drums and spears, which have been symbolically inverted since the passing of the previous monarch, Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV. These rituals are expected to extend through the night, culminating in the formal coronation.
Meanwhile, preparations at Karuziika Palace are in full swing. Subjects continue to bring their customary offerings, known as ‘okuhikya,’ while the palace grounds are being set up with tents to accommodate expected guests. The palace itself is undergoing a facelift, with repainting and reorganization to ensure readiness for the historic occasion.
Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I is officially set to be crowned on Tuesday at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal City.
