Ssenyonyi Lauds New Parliamentary Leadership for Enhanced Decorum and Freedom

Leader of the Opposition Joel Ssenyonyi has expressed satisfaction with the new leadership in Parliament, noting a significant improvement in decorum and a more open atmosphere for diverse viewpoints. Ssenyonyi, speaking to journalists alongside his shadow cabinet, highlighted that the current parliamentary proceedings under Speaker Jacob Oboth-Oboth foster greater freedom of expression and respect for differing opinions.

This positive assessment marks a departure from Ssenyonyi’s previously critical stance towards the 11th Parliament’s leadership, particularly under former Speaker Anita Among. He had frequently voiced concerns about the management of parliamentary affairs and alleged exclusion from crucial meetings of the Parliamentary Commission, despite his ex-officio membership.

Ssenyonyi had previously raised issues regarding transparency and the inclusion of all members in the Parliamentary Commission’s operations. Tensions between Ssenyonyi and the previous leadership often manifested on the parliamentary floor, involving clashes over procedures and the handling of legislative business, which sometimes led to Opposition walkouts.

“I take this opportunity to thank the new Parliamentary leadership, where there is decorum and respect for each other, unlike in the previous leadership where ministers were being ordered on the floor of Parliament to shut up and members of Parliament ordered to sit down,” Ssenyonyi stated.

He urged lawmakers to maintain mutual respect and prioritize the interests of taxpayers. While acknowledging the positive shifts, Ssenyonyi and his shadow cabinet emphasized the continued need for Parliament to scrutinize government actions, advocate against excessive borrowing, and uphold robust oversight functions to ensure accountability of public institutions.
