She Cranes Capture African Crown in Nairobi, Avenge Previous Loss

The Ugandan She Cranes have emerged victorious at the Africa Netball Cup, clinching their fourth continental title by defeating South Africa 56-53 in a hard-fought final held in Nairobi, Kenya. This triumph marks the end of an eight-year wait for the crown and completes an unbeaten run for the team under coach Rashid Mubiru.

Uganda’s path to the final saw them dominate the group stage, overcoming Nigeria, Zambia, hosts Kenya, and Malawi. They continued their strong performance in the semi-finals, securing a decisive 52-41 victory against Namibia. The final match against South Africa was a tense affair, with the She Cranes demonstrating accurate shooting, disciplined possession, and formidable defensive pressure to counter the Proteas’ attempts to seize control.

The attacking prowess of Christine Namulumba, Shadiah Nassanga, and captain Racheal Nanyonga proved crucial, their experience steadying the team during critical moments. Nassanga’s exceptional shooting earned her the Best Goal Shooter award. In midfield, Margaret Baagala’s influential play in linking defense and attack, and maintaining possession under pressure, was recognized with the Best Midcourt Player award. The defensive unit, comprising Gloria Aya, Nassim Mutesi, and Shaffie Nalwanja, consistently disrupted opponents, creating vital turnovers.

Coach Mubiru’s focus on endurance and squad depth was instrumental in navigating the demanding tournament schedule. The victory also served as sweet revenge for the She Cranes, who had lost to South Africa in the previous year’s final.

Amidst the celebrations, the tournament faced controversy regarding its format, as it was combined with qualification for the 2027 Netball World Cup. While Uganda and South Africa had already secured World Cup spots based on rankings, the competition also aimed to determine two additional African representatives. Adjustments to the format and scheduling led to discussions, but ultimately, Uganda’s on-court performance overshadowed administrative uncertainties. The She Cranes not only secured the continental title but also solidified their place at the 2027 Netball World Cup, alongside South Africa, Namibia, and Malawi.
