One-Third of Ugandan Health Workers Eyeing Departure, WHO Report Reveals

A concerning trend is emerging within Uganda’s health sector, with nearly a third of its workforce contemplating emigration or a career change, a recent World Health Organization (WHO) report indicates. This potential exodus of skilled professionals raises serious alarms for the nation’s healthcare system, which already grapples with substantial workforce shortages.

The report highlights a confluence of factors contributing to this dissatisfaction, including high rates of unemployment and underemployment within the health professions, coupled with general job dissatisfaction. These issues are pushing dedicated healthcare workers to seek opportunities beyond Uganda’s borders or outside the field entirely.

Ms. Kira Koch, the WHO Uganda Health Systems Coordinator, has identified migration as a critical issue that demands urgent attention and reversal. “Severe health workforce shortages” already plague the country, hindering its ability to adequately meet the population’s healthcare needs. The potential loss of a significant percentage of these vital workers could exacerbate an already precarious situation.
