The National Social Security Fund (NSSF) has announced a record payout of Shs5.44 trillion to its members, driven by an unprecedented interest rate of 22.53% for the 2025/2026 financial year.

This exceptional rate marks the highest in the Fund’s four-decade history, far exceeding the previous year’s 13.5% and the typical 12-15% offered by other pension schemes in Uganda.

The significant payout means that individual member accounts have seen substantial growth. The largest single beneficiary received an impressive Shs2.14 billion. This individual payout suggests a substantial account balance, as the declared interest rate of 22.53% on this amount points to an estimated balance of around Shs9.5 billion.

The NSSF’s ability to achieve such high returns has been a subject of interest, with questions arising about how the Fund will sustain these gains while ensuring the long-term security and growth of member savings. The declared interest rate is directly tied to the actual earnings generated by the Fund during the financial year, indicating strong performance in its investments.

This development has also spurred interest in voluntary savings schemes, as members witnessing the tangible benefits of accrued interest are motivated to increase their contributions.
