Namayanja: National Cleaning Day is About Personal Health, Not Just Government Duty

Rose Namayanja, the Deputy Secretary General of the National Resistance Movement (NRM), is emphasizing that the National Cleaning Day initiative is fundamentally about safeguarding community health. She called on citizens to shift their perspective, viewing cleanliness as a personal responsibility rather than solely a government obligation.

Namayanja highlighted that maintaining clean surroundings is crucial for preventing diseases such as cholera and typhoid, which are directly linked to poor sanitation. Her comments were made while participating in a community cleaning drive led by Seventh-day Adventists in Kapeeka, Nakaseke District.

The NRM official commended the Seventh-day Adventists for their enthusiastic participation, noting that they joined the exercise on Sunday, a day accommodating their Sabbath observance, despite rainy weather and without coercion.

She specifically chose Kapeeka for the exercise due to observed sanitation challenges in the densely populated area. Namayanja pledged continued engagement with the community until regular cleaning becomes an ingrained habit.

Pastor Emmanuel Okoth of Kapeeka SDA District echoed the importance of sanitation for public health, expressing gratitude for the government’s flexibility in allowing their participation on Sunday. Local councillor Joyce Nakayenga also urged residents to integrate cleanliness into their daily lives to proactively prevent illness.

The National Cleaning Day is observed on the last Saturday of each month, with accommodations made for religious groups like the Seventh-day Adventists who observe Saturday as their Sabbath. This marked the third nationwide exercise since the program’s inception.
