Luweero District Gears Up for Major Road Rehabilitation Effort

Luweero District is embarking on a significant road improvement initiative, starting with the rehabilitation of the 12-kilometer Wobulenzi–Sekamuli road. This project, costing Shs96 million, is the first phase of a larger plan to address approximately 100 kilometers of roads throughout the district in the 2026/27 financial year.

District officials have secured Shs250 million from the annual Shs1 billion government road fund dedicated to district-level road maintenance. The current phase will see the Wobulenzi–Sekamuli road properly graded, with damaged sections and potholes repaired. This work is expected to enhance transportation efficiency and improve access to local markets for residents.

Luweero District Chairperson Erasto Kibirango stated that in addition to the Wobulenzi–Sekamuli road, three other roads are slated for rehabilitation this quarter. Among the planned projects for the financial year are the nine-kilometer Naluvule–Kikooza road and the Sekamuli–Luwuube road, which will receive Shs63 million.

Residents have expressed enthusiasm for the rehabilitation, highlighting how the poor state of the roads, particularly during the rainy season, has negatively impacted their ability to transport agricultural produce to market. They often face increased transportation costs due to the difficult road conditions. Local leaders have welcomed the program but stressed the importance of diligent oversight to ensure funds are used effectively and the work meets required standards.

Improved road networks are anticipated to bolster connectivity, facilitating the movement of goods and agricultural products between Wobulenzi, Sekamuli, and surrounding communities, thereby supporting the local economy. The district aims for lasting improvements rather than temporary fixes.
