Bakery owners in Kampala are implementing a subtle but significant change: shrinking their products. Facing unprecedented hikes in egg prices, many businesses can no longer afford to use the same quantity of eggs in their recipes without raising their final prices.
Margaret Samoka, owner of Maggie Cakes in Kireka, shared her strategy. Previously, a standard cake order costing Shs50,000 would require 12 eggs. Now, she uses only nine, reducing the overall size of the cake while keeping the price unchanged. This tactic, often referred to as ‘shrinkflation,’ allows businesses to retain customers who might be deterred by higher costs.
The current egg crisis has seen prices climb dramatically over the past three months. This surge is impacting businesses across the city, from small bakeries to street food vendors. The increased cost at the farm gate is ultimately passed down, affecting the final price consumers pay or, as in many cases, the quantity they receive.
This situation highlights the broader economic pressures affecting small businesses, as they navigate challenges like increased production costs for essential ingredients. The egg price hike is a direct consequence of factors such as the rising cost of animal feed and escalating fuel prices, which impact transportation and overall production expenses.
For vendors and bakers in Kampala, adapting by reducing product size is a way to absorb some of these increased costs and maintain business operations amidst challenging economic conditions. The practice ensures that while the product might be smaller, the price point remains accessible to their customer base.
