Kabalega Airport Successfully Hosts Inaugural Passenger Flights Ahead of AFCON Preparations

Kabalega International Airport, located in Hoima district, recently marked a significant milestone by handling its first passenger flights. This event served as an early operational test for the new facility, underscoring Uganda’s readiness for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) finals, which the country will co-host with Kenya and Tanzania.

The initial flights included an Eagle Air aircraft carrying officials from the Confederation of African Football (CAF) and members of the local organizing committee. Shortly after, the Libyan national football team landed at the airport aboard an Eagle Uganda-operated plane for their upcoming AFCON qualifier match against the Uganda Cranes.

The arrival of both teams provided a practical assessment of the airport’s capabilities, particularly as Hoima gears up to host its first competitive international football match involving the Cranes outside the capital. Works and Transport Minister Fred Byamukama confirmed that the flights were organized to test the facility and showcase its preparedness before its official commissioning.

Beyond its role in AFCON preparations, Kabalega Airport is a key piece of infrastructure for the burgeoning oil industry in the Albertine region. Construction began in April 2018, with the airport designed to facilitate the movement of personnel, equipment, and cargo for the oil and gas sector. The facility boasts a 3.5-kilometer runway, a cargo terminal, control tower, and passenger terminal, capable of accommodating multiple cargo aircraft.

The airport’s completion is nearing, with the contractor anticipating handover by the end of October. Alongside the airport, the 20,000-seater Hoima City Stadium is also being finalized to meet AFCON standards, featuring modern amenities and a hybrid pitch.
