Kabale University Pursues US Academic Ties Amid Diplomat's Visit

During an official visit to Kabale University, U.S. Chargé d’Affaires Mikael Cleverley urged students to adopt an entrepreneurial spirit and focus on transforming local agricultural produce into value-added industries. He highlighted the region’s rich agricultural base, including potatoes, beans, and bananas, as a strong foundation for innovation in areas like agritech.

Mr. Cleverley also encouraged American researchers and academic institutions to visit the Kigezi region, recognizing its unique expertise in sustainable mountain agriculture and conservation. He emphasized that these practices, honed over generations, hold global relevance and offer valuable learning opportunities.

Connecting his message to America’s upcoming 250th independence anniversary, Cleverley stressed the importance of shared values like freedom, innovation, and enterprise in driving economic growth and international relations. He expressed optimism that future advancements in agritech and conservation could originate from institutions like Kabale University.

The university, represented by Acting Vice Chancellor Prof. Johnny Mugisha, outlined its desire for collaboration with U.S. entities in areas such as living labs, hospitality, joint research, student and staff exchanges, and establishing a central research laboratory. However, Prof. Mugisha noted challenges including limited infrastructure, financial constraints, and difficulties in identifying and connecting with suitable American partners.

Despite these obstacles, university officials expressed hope that Mr. Cleverley’s visit would forge new international networks and strengthen institutional links with American academic bodies. The U.S. Embassy reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Ugandan education through programs like Fulbright.
