The Ministry of Information and National Guidance has issued a strong call to action for editors and information stakeholders across Uganda, emphasizing the critical need to guard against the proliferation of misinformation. Permanent Secretary Dr. Aminah Zawedde highlighted that misleading content poses a significant threat, capable of damaging Uganda’s reputation both domestically and on the international stage.

Dr. Zawedde stressed that the consequences of misinformation extend far beyond individual media outlets. Negative portrayals of the country can have lasting repercussions, impacting various sectors and communities, and influencing decisions for generations to come.

Speaking at a forum discussing the evolving information landscape, Dr. Zawedde urged editors to exercise heightened diligence in verifying and publishing information. This is particularly crucial in the current digital era, where content can spread virally across social media and other online platforms with unprecedented speed.

Andrew Ojok Oulanyah, Chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on ICT and National Guidance, echoed these concerns. He reminded editors that information holds enduring power, potentially shaping perspectives and decisions long after its initial publication. Oulanyah underscored the responsibility media professionals bear in curating the information that reaches the public, especially with the increased accessibility brought by digital technologies.
