As Tooro Kingdom gears up for the coronation of Omukama-designate Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I on September 29, a clear commitment to unity has been articulated by the heir. The official program, released by the head of protocol Dr. Richard Rwabuhinga, details a symbolic procession from Rwengoma Palace to Karuziika Palace, marking the transition of royal authority. Nyabongo I is expected to undergo traditional rites throughout the night preceding the formal coronation ceremony.
Speaking on his upbringing, Nyabongo I emphasized that his royal heritage was instilled in him as a profound responsibility rather than a mere privilege. He stated, “I was raised with a strong awareness of where I come from — the son of Prince Christopher Paul Kijanangoma and grandson of Omukama Sir George Rukidi III — and with an equally strong insistence that heritage must be matched by discipline and hard work.” His family, he noted, consistently presented his royal lineage as a duty requiring diligent preparation.
Beyond his royal upbringing, Nyabongo I brings extensive professional experience, having dedicated 24 years to building a career in journalism and public communication. This blend of traditional heritage and practical experience is seen as a unique foundation for his leadership.
The selection process saw Nyabongo I chosen by the Babiito Royal Clan on September 9, subsequently endorsed by the Tooro Kingdom Supreme Council. The government has recognized the succession, with a Gazette notice pending. The coronation event will feature a church blessing at St John’s Cathedral and is anticipated to be graced by President Yoweri Museveni as the chief guest.
The new Omukama’s pledge for unity is particularly significant, given that his succession has reportedly encountered some internal disagreements within the royal family. His focus on bringing the kingdom together is expected to be a cornerstone of his reign.
