Activist Aloikin remanded over alleged SIM card misuse

Twenty-seven-year-old human rights advocate Aloikin Praise Opoloje is currently detained at Luzira Prison following a ruling by the Buganda Road Chief Magistrate’s court. Opoloje faces charges related to the alleged use of a SIM card registered to another individual.

Her arrest occurred over the weekend, reportedly under the pretense of resolving an issue concerning a carpet allegedly stolen from a car wash. Instead, Opoloje was apprehended by detectives.

Appearing before Senior Principal Grade One Magistrate Winnie Nankya Jatiko, Opoloje was formally charged with violating the Regulation of Interception of Communications Regulations, 2024. The charge sheet states that in September 2026, Opoloje is accused of unlawfully using an MTN SIM card, registered under the name Martha Nalapa Tasima, for purposes of illegal activity.

Court documents suggest the case is linked to investigations into social media content attributed to Opoloje. Investigations by Sgt Titus Mucunguzi of Defence Intelligence and Security (DIS) reportedly focused on posts made in September 2026, which contained insulting commentary and vulgar language directed at the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba. The SIM card used for these posts was allegedly registered to Nalapa but was in Opoloje’s possession.

In one video mentioned in court, Opoloje is heard advocating for justice and asserting her lack of fear towards Gen Kainerugaba, while also accusing him of orchestrating abductions and human rights abuses.

This is not Opoloje’s first encounter with legal proceedings. In September 2024, she was charged with common nuisance alongside two others for participating in a nude protest against corruption. She denied the current charges and is scheduled for a bail application hearing on October 14, 2026.
